E-Invoicing in Accounting: XRechnung and ZUGFeRD

Since January 2025, businesses in Germany have had to be able to receive e-invoices from other businesses. As things currently stand, businesses with a previous-year turnover of more than 800,000 euros will also have to issue e-invoices from 2027, and in principle all businesses from 2028. On this course you bring your accounting up to this standard.

Who the course is for

For staff in bookkeeping and accounting, office staff who write or process invoices, and employees of tax firms who support clients with the changeover. We assume a basic knowledge of bookkeeping.

What you will learn

Legal framework: what an e-invoice is, which obligations have applied since 2025 and which are coming in 2027 and 2028, and what transitional rules and exemptions exist, for example for small businesses and low-value invoices up to 250 euros.

Formats: XRechnung and ZUGFeRD, the European standard EN 16931 and why all mandatory information must be contained in the structured data.

Practice: receiving e-invoices, making them readable and validating them, spotting and querying errors, creating your own e-invoices.

Workflow in the business: from receipt through checking and approval to archiving in line with the GoBD.

How the course works

Lessons take place live online. You work with sample invoices and freely available validation tools, and take away a checklist for the changeover in your business.

FAQs

Does the obligation also apply to small businesses?

Since 2025, all businesses in Germany have had to be able to receive e-invoices. Transitional periods until the end of 2027 apply to issuing them. Small businesses and low-value invoices are exempt. On the course we go through the rules in detail.

Is a PDF sent by email an e-invoice?

No. An e-invoice has a structured data format that can be processed automatically, such as XRechnung or ZUGFeRD. A plain PDF counts as an "other invoice".
